From the director of Keeping up with the Kandasamys (2017), Jayan Moodley has released another South African treasure - Meet the Khumalos. A satirical comedy about loving thy neighbour and micro-managing your family, this story follows two Durbanite moms determined to shatter their children’s blossoming romance. Upon their quest, Grace Khumalo (Khanyi Mbau) and Bongi Sithole (Ayanda Borotho) rekindle their lost friendship and heal from their past mistakes. Below, find 31 thoughts I had while watching Meet the Khumalos for the first time.
Ohh! That outfit. Not many can rock a chiffon, emerald cape.
“Lord, give me strength.” - Grace, we all need a little bit of this
Grace is the perfect type A if I ever saw one.
The music in this film is fire.
Is there ancient history between Grace and Bongi Sithole?
“What in the informal settlement is going here?” - the most iconic dialogue.
There is a lot of tension between Sizwe Khumalo and Sphe Sithole, and I am not talking about the formal debate.
Ohh! Is this a forbidden romance?
This feels familiar.
It’s Aya Kandasamy!
They’ve been sneaking around for 6 months?!
Brown gogos all have the same problems - back pains and daughter-in-laws.
Sizwe and Sphe are giving Romeo and Juliet a run for their money.
Of course, the husbands bond over sports and food!
Gracious really does have the best outfits
Sizwe is 100% a coconut, or Oreo.
Did he just empty his bladder onto his mom’s Versace?!
“It’s a Ver-sa-pee.”
Bongi and Grace are bonding!
“My pink little assistant.” - someone is going to find that vibrator.
Mmmmmhhh....This really feels familiar (Shanti and Jennifer)
There is nothing like padkos on the beach.
Did Ma Grace just offer an all-expense paid vacation to Ibiza?
Grandma Mavis using the pink little assistant in church was not on my list.
Sphe is a denim-on-denim girlie!
Underneath all those frills and glitter, Gracious Khumalo is still mourning what she once had - a family and stability.
Bongi is a diva! Those baby-pink, diamante nails are to die for.
Yes Oreo man! You love her. Go tell her !
Jayan Moodley never disappoints. She knows how to deliver an emotional scene.
Oreo man has become a man of culture!
A beautiful portrayal of the Zulu rite of passage filled with colour, dance and beadwork.
