Thokoza-based photography education programme Of Soul & Joy (OSJ) is set to launch an evocative exhibition at the historic Constitution Hill Gallery in Johannesburg. Titled ‘I Put My Hand On My Chest To Feel My Heartbeat’, the exhibition will run from 1 February to 31 March 2025 and will showcase the work of 16 current and former students of the initiative.
Through a collection of compelling photographs, visitors are invited to explore the vibrant lives and stories of Thokoza township. The exhibition celebrates 30 years of democracy in South Africa, capturing the evolving voices of the nation’s youth as they navigate a complex socio-economic landscape still marked by challenges like unemployment and crime.

Curated by multidisciplinary artist and Constitution Hill Creative Uprising Hub co-ordinator, Lesole Tauatswala, the exhibition delves into personal and collective narratives. “This exhibition offers an intimate glimpse into the heart of Thokoza through the lens of its youth,” says Tauatswala.
The featured works explore themes such as identity, family dynamics, spirituality, and cultural symbolism. Through the eyes of talented emerging photographers, viewers are introduced to the nuances of daily life in Thokoza, with images that evoke both the ordinary and extraordinary moments of the township’s vibrant existence.

OSJ Project Manager Jabulani Dhlamini, the exhibition represents more than artistic expression. “These photographs embody the pulse of the community, telling stories that are deeply personal and universally resonant,” he explains. From ancestral connections to reflections on belonging, the young photographers use their craft to examine their place within their community and the larger world.
Visitors can look forward to curated walkabouts and thought-provoking panel discussions throughout the exhibition’s duration:
Walkabouts will take place in mid-February (dates to be announced).
Panel Discussions include an event on 22 February 2025 and another during Constitution Hill’s annual Human Rights Festival on 21 March 2025.
These activities will provide a deeper understanding of the creative processes behind the works and the role of Thokoza’s youth in shaping South African storytelling.
