Mia Le Roux Stuns at Cape Town Fashion Week with a Miss Universe National Costume Masterpiece

Updated: Dec 3, 2024

Cape Town Fashion Week witnessed an unforgettable moment as Miss South Africa 2024, Mia Le Roux, unveiled her breathtaking Miss Universe National Costume. Seamlessly blending South Africa’s cultural heritage with avant-garde fashion, the gown captivated audiences with its intricate design and profound symbolism. This debut, graced by the presence of the iconic Dr. Esther Mahlangu, transformed the runway into a celebration of art, identity, and resilience, setting the stage for South Africa’s representation on the global Miss Universe platform.

While initially set to premiere at the Miss Universe finale, the show-stopping gown made an early debut in the presence of legendary artist Dr. Esther Mahlangu. Known globally for her bold and sacred Ndebele art prints, Mahlangu’s unmistakable aesthetic served as the foundation for this extraordinary creation.

The gown, adorned with the vivid geometry and colours synonymous with Mahlangu’s work, is a celebration of South Africa’s rich cultural tapestry. Designed collaboratively by Africa Fashion International (AFI), the dress represents an exchange of artistic legacy, blending tradition with contemporary fashion. The craftsmanship behind the gown is as remarkable as its inspiration. Emerging designers and artisans from the AFI Atelier worked tirelessly under the mentorship of AFI Creative Director Gavin Rajah, dedicating over 150 hours and incorporating more than 70,000 crystals into the intricate design.

“It’s a piece that embodies cultural sustainability while nurturing the future of South African design,” said Dr. Precious Moloi-Motsepe, Founder and CEO of AFI. “This gown symbolises an exchange of creativity, diversity, and heritage—a true reflection of South Africa’s spirit.”

Dr. Esther Mahlangu’s influence on the design goes beyond aesthetics; it’s a tribute to South Africa’s enduring artistry. Her collaboration with AFI not only highlights her legendary status but also offers a platform for emerging talent to carry the legacy forward. “Our traditions are integral to who we are,” said Stephanie Weil, CEO of the Miss South Africa Organisation. “This collaboration with Dr. Mahlangu and AFI is a proud celebration of our heritage and a testament to our identity.”

For Mia Le Roux, the gown is deeply personal. Meeting Dr. Mahlangu on the opening day of Cape Town Fashion Week, she shared her heartfelt connection to the costume. “This gown is a tribute to the diversity of my heritage and the creativity that defines South African artistry,” Le Roux said. “Its bold, colourful expressions resonate with my own journey and the vibrant energy of our nation.”

Beyond the runway, Mia participated in the AFI Masterclass, where she spoke candidly about her journey, touching on resilience and breaking barriers. “There were moments in my life when I felt like doors weren’t opening despite my efforts,” she shared. “But platforms like Miss South Africa are creating space for people to embrace their differences and shine. Just because you do things differently doesn’t mean you can’t do it well. Sometimes, you need to be the first to set new trends and define new moods.”
