When the Nintendo Switch launched in 2017, handheld gaming wasn’t new, but the hybrid concept it introduced stood out. It blurred the lines between home console and portable play, offering something distinct while still carrying the unmistakable Nintendo identity, It was a hit. So much so that eight years on, the original model continued to sell in significant numbers. But now, after years of speculation, the Switch 2 is officially Scheduled for release on 5 June 2025, it builds on the original’s legacy with updates to its design, tech, and overall performance.
What’s New with the Nintendo Switch 2?
The Nintendo Switch 2 arrives with a noticeable boost in size and specs, aimed at bringing a more powerful, polished experience:
A Larger LCD Screen
The Switch 2 comes with a 7.9-inch LCD screen, now capable of full HD (1080p) resolution. While some expected an OLED panel, Nintendo has opted to stick with LCD for this initial release. It’s likely we’ll see an OLED version later down the line, as was the case with the first Switch. Despite the screen upgrade, the overall thickness of the console remains the same.
Redesigned Joy-Con Controllers
The Joy-Con 2 controllers still attach to the console with a familiar click, but this time they connect magnetically. The updated design also adds new ways to interact with games; each controller can now be used like a mouse when slid across a table or even a pair of jeans. They’re still versatile, with support for motion controls and games that require aiming.
New Kickstand and USB-C Options
A redesigned stand at the back now allows players to adjust viewing angles more freely when playing in tabletop mode. Charging also gets a quality-of-life upgrade: in addition to the usual USB-C port on the bottom, there's now one at the top of the console, making it easier to keep the Switch 2 powered in different play setups. It also opens up support for USB-C cameras, such as Nintendo’s own accessory, which can be used for video chat via a new feature called GameChat.
More Power Under the Hood
Internally, the Switch 2 features a major bump in CPU and GPU performance. That translates into faster load times, better graphics, and support for more demanding games. The console is also equipped with improved audio, offering clearer, more spatial sound, particularly noticeable in handheld or tabletop mode.
Storage Boost and Faster Memory
Storage sees a huge jump to 256 GB, eight times that of the original Switch. Nintendo has also moved to microSD Express cards for expandable storage, which should allow for faster read speeds compared to older microSD formats.
Backward Compatibility
The Switch 2 will support a wide range of physical and digital games released for the original Switch, although not all titles will be compatible. Existing Joy-Cons and accessories, like the Pro Controller, can also be paired with the new system.
4K and 120 fps on TV
The new dock allows for 4K output and frame rates of up to 120 fps on compatible TVs and games. This should make for a noticeably sharper and smoother experience when gaming on a larger screen.
GameChat: Connecting with Friends Across Distances
With the new GameChat online feature, Nintendo Switch 2 lets players enjoy seamless in-game communication, no matter how far apart they are. GameChat makes it feel as though players are sitting together on the same couch, whether they're celebrating a victory or simply saying hello. Players can start a chat by pressing the C Button on the right Joy-Con 2 controller. The console’s built-in mic supports voice chat with up to 12 people at once, and up to four players can share their screen. For those wanting to see their friends face-to-face, a compatible USB-C camera, such as the Nintendo Switch 2 camera (sold separately), can be connected for video chat. Additional friends can join the chat with audio only.

Game Sharing and Digital Lending
Nintendo is set to roll out innovative ways for players to share digital games with friends and family on the highly anticipated Switch 2, making multiplayer experiences and game access more seamless and connected than ever before.
GameShare
GameShare lets players temporarily share certain games with others who don’t own them. If one person owns a compatible title and a Switch 2 console, they can invite others to play the same game via local multiplayer, even if the others are using the original Switch. Between two Switch 2 consoles, GameShare also works with GameChat, allowing users to communicate in real-time while playing together.
Virtual Game Cards
Virtual game cards make managing digital libraries easier and more flexible. All purchased digital games linked to a Nintendo Account are displayed in one menu. Once a game is downloaded, it can be played offline, and other users on the same console can also access it.
Games can also be lent or borrowed within the same Nintendo Account family group. Using local wireless communication, players can temporarily share digital games with each other in the form of virtual game cards, making it possible to “lend” a game to someone nearby without requiring an internet connection.
