Why Sunscreen should be your Best Friend in Winter!!!

Sunscreen is often associated with summer, and therefore, during winter, many of us overlook the use of sun protection. However, it is important that we always use sunscreen despite the weather. Dr Vanessa Lapiner, a specialist dermatologist based in Cape Town, stresses the importance of using sunscreen. When asked what’s the most important product in her skincare routine, Dr Lapiner emphasised that it is sunscreen, not only because it protects your skin from UV rays, but because it ensures the effectiveness of any other skincare products that you may be using.

What are UV Rays?

Ultra-violet (UV) radiation is a type of electromagnetic energy that originates from both natural and artificial sources. Artificial sources of UV radiation include lasers, black lights, and tanning beds.

Our most significant source of natural UV radiation results from the sun. It is formed through nuclear reactions at the sun’s core, and it reaches Earth through its rays. Although the sun emits various types of rays, Ultra-Violet (UV) rays are the most harmful to our skin. They are present even on dark or overcast days.

What's the Difference between UVA and UVB Rays?

UV rays are categorised into three types based on their wavelength: UVA (longest wavelength), UVB (medium wavelength), and UVC (shortest wavelength). UVC rays are generally blocked by the Earth’s ozone layer, and therefore we are not exposed to UVC rays from the sun. However, lasers and welding torches do emit UVC rays and thus it is important to protect ourselves around these sources.

Unlike UVB rays that only reach the outer layer of our skin, the epidermis, UVA rays are able to penetrate the middle layer of our skin, the middle layer. Thus, it is important to always use sunscreen to keep your skin protected.

Do I need to use Sunscreen in Winter?

Yes! Even on foggy or overcast days when the sun isn't visible, UV rays can still penetrate through the clouds. Both UVA and UVB rays are present and their impact is real. . UVA rays, with their longer wavelength, can penetrate deep into the skin, causing cellular damage. Overtime, these rays contribute to premature ageing—think fine lines, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation like melasma and sunspots and let's not forget the risk of skin cancer.

Many of us think that we do not need to use sunscreen indoors, especially during winter. However, you still need to protect your skin, particularly if you are constantly near a window during the day. This is because you are exposed to the UVA rays that can easily pass through glass.

How should I choose the right Sunscreen?

Whether it’s summer or winter, experts typically recommend that you look out for the following when choosing a sunscreen:

1. SPF30 or SPF50

Both SPF30 and SPF50 are readily available in lightweight formulas. This makes it easier to incorporate into your daily skincare routine, unlike SPF100 which can be rather thick in texture. SPF, short for Sun Protection Factor, is a measure of how long your skin will be protected from the sun. For example, if you are prone to getting sunburnt after spending 10 minutes in the sun, SPF30 will protect your skin for approximately 10 x 30 = 300 minutes, or 5 hours. Therefore, it is important to reapply your sunscreen based on your SPF.

2. Broad Spectrum

Ensure that your SPF is broad-spectrum to offer comprehensive protection against both UVA and UVB rays. This means the sunscreen will safeguard your skin from the full spectrum of harmful ultraviolet radiation, preventing both premature ageing and sunburn.

3. Mineral/Physical vs Chemical

Unlike chemical sunscreens that absorb the sun’s rays, mineral sunscreens, also known as physical sunscreens, act as a protective shield by creating a physical barrier on your skin that reflects away harmful rays. Mineral sunscreens typically contain ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These ingredients sit on your skin and physically block or reflect UV rays. This natural defence offers an added layer of security, ensuring your skin stays safe and radiant under the sun. For those seeking a more skin-friendly and eco-conscious option, mineral sunscreen is a must-have in your daily skincare routine.

4. Non-comedogenic

For those of us with sensitive skin, it is important to select a sunscreen that is non-comedogenic. Mineral sunscreens, with their lightweight formulas, are ideal as they won't clog your pores, offering gentle protection without compromising your skin’s clarity.

How much Sunscreen should I Apply?

Use two to three finger lengths of sunscreen for your face and neck, and remember to apply sunscreen to other exposed areas, such as your arms, lips, and décolletage. Lip balms that contain SPF often come in handy. Don’t forget to reapply your sunscreen during the day, especially if you’re spending time outdoors — even in winter.
